What would you think if you saw a sign on a door to a closed room that said, “Don’t open this door! All the dark will leak out.”? I don’t know about you, but it makes me feel creepy. It reminds me of Bela Lugosi and his scary eyes, and the feeling that something is behind me, ready to pounce! It literally raises the hair on the back of my neck. I would steer clear of that room!
We all have “rooms”. Our rooms contain our emotions, past experiences, our thoughts and hopes, our very essence. Nobody can see into our room unless we or someone else opens the door. When the door opens, something leaks out and reveals what is in our room.
Sometimes we want to keep our room dark because turning on the light reveals what is in it. We may not want to face it or not want someone else to see it. Depending on how much dirt and clutter we allow to accumulate, we may need to clean. Of course, once we clean, it won’t always stay that way. We must clean and declutter regularly to maintain a clean internal environment. Light helps us see the clutter and dirt. After all, a well-lit and clean room is inviting.
Darkness confines and hinders our growth. We can’t see ahead, so we feel our way to where we want or need to go not sure if we’re headed in the right direction. Once we turn on a light, we can see around us and know exactly where we are going. We can move or change things we need to faster.
I know we have days when we’d rather not turn on a light and not see what is in our room and deal with it. But if someone opens our door, and the dark leaks out, it turns people away. When someone finds themselves in darkness, they stumble around and can get hurt unexpectedly.
But when we turn on the light, it leaks out of our room. It is warm and inviting. People want to come close, especially if it is cold and darkness is on the other side of the door. People are drawn to the light and want to be around it. It gives people hope.
Our faith in the Lord and His Word, the Bible, is our light. If we pray, have a relationship with Jesus, and read our Bible, it brings light into our lives. That light reveals His plan for us and what we need to do to put our room in order.
If you were to tape a sign on your door, what would it say?
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5
